TREASURY CHAMBERS
Sir,
27183
25608
The Lords Commissioners of His Majesty's Treasury have had before Them the letters from your Department of the 15th (24506/08), 17th (25608) and 21st (26368) ultimo,
on the subject of the British Postal Agency at Tientsin. They have also received a copy of the letter on the same subject addressed by the Postmaster General to your Department on the 25th ultimo, I am now to state, for the information of the Earl of Crewe, the conclusion at which Their Lordships have arrived.
My Lords cannot assent to the view implied by the penultimate paragraph of the letter from the China Association of the 14th ultimo, that this Agency should as a matter of course be maintained solely at Imperial charges. In view, however, of the opinion of the Postmaster General that the immediate abolition of the Agency is inexpedient, They will not refuse to co-operate in the maintenance of the Agency on a provisional basis for one year from 10th October next.
They are accordingly prepared, in the special circumstances of the case and without prejudice to any general decision which may be arrived at before October
The Under Secretary of State,
Colonial Office.
